Viral Travel Carousels: Lessons From 307 Instagram Outliers

A travel list scored 662.8× its creator’s usual, yet travel and lifestyle carousels beat their usual less often than average. What 307 outliers show.

The third-highest score in our whole library belongs to a travel carousel: an 11-slide list by @madlertravel that got 160,730 likes and comments, 662.8× its creator’s usual of about 240. Yet as a niche, lifestyle and travel beats its creators’ usual less often than average.

Of the 745 lifestyle and travel carousels we scored, 46.0% got more likes and comments than their creator normally does, against 49.3% across all 9,923. Only fashion and beauty is lower. The ceiling is high and the floor is low, and the 307 outliers in our library, from 74 creators, show what the posts that cleared it did.

A 662.8× list, and what we can and can’t see in it

The score compares a post with its own creator’s usual: the median likes and comments of up to 20 of their carousels posted around the same time. @madlertravel’s usual works out to about 240 (160,730 ÷ 662.8). This one post did more than six hundred times that, which says something about the post, not the size of the account. If the score is new to you, here’s how an outlier is worked out.

What we know about it: 11 slides, a list, posted on 26 August. We don’t have its first slide transcribed, so we won’t guess at it. The caption is four words: “What countries are missing?”

That caption is a question anyone with a passport can answer, and comments count towards the score alongside likes. It is a reasonable reading that the open question helped. It isn’t proof, and a post this far out is not something to plan around.

How does lifestyle and travel compare with other niches?

Here are the 745 scored lifestyle and travel carousels against our full sample:

  • Beat their usual (1×): 46.0%, against 49.3%. The second-lowest of our 13 niches.
  • Reached 2×: 22.6%, against 23.8%.
  • Reached 3×: 14.8%, against 14.9%.
  • Median score: 0.9×, the same as overall.

So travel posts fall short of their creator’s usual more often than most, but at 3× the niche is level with the average: the misses don’t stop the breakouts. One caveat for all of this: the sample is a mix of the creators we track, not a random slice of Instagram, and these are correlations, not causes.

The top of the niche is as much hobbies as trips

None of the six highest-scoring posts in this niche has a transcribed first slide, so here they are by score, size and caption:

  • @madlertravel: 662.8×, 160,730 likes and comments, 11 slides, list.
  • @nickandraychel: 61.3×, 55,551 likes and comments, 12 slides, list. Caption: “If you’re ready to drop everything and go… I gotchu”.
  • @cozylifediary: 47.3×, 20,174 likes and comments, 20 slides, list. The caption is about getting off your phone and taking up a hobby in 2026.
  • @billionaireunions: 47.1×, 128,262 likes and comments, 7 slides, list. Caption: “Hobbies remind you that life is also meant to be enjoyed!”
  • @tenderontour: 45.7×, 59,812 likes and comments, 11 slides, story. Caption: “more mountain moments”.
  • @thejosephplacido: 31.2×, 174,740 likes and comments, 4 slides, story. Caption: “the last one”.

Four of the six are lists, and two of those are about hobbies, not destinations. If you post about travel, the niche you’re competing in also includes how people spend a Sunday.

Ten slides is the norm here

The median lifestyle and travel outlier has 10 slides. That’s the second-longest of our 13 niches, behind history & culture at 12; most niches sit at 7 to 9. The spread across all 307:

  • 2–5 slides: 13%
  • 6–8 slides: 24%
  • 9–12 slides: 39%
  • 13–20 slides: 23%

So 62% of travel outliers use nine slides or more. A trip or a list of places fills slides naturally, one location or moment each, which may be part of the reason. Across our full sample, carousels with 10 slides reached 2× their creator’s usual 26.5% of the time and those with 11–15 slides 27.7%, against 17.3% for 2–3 slides.

There are short exceptions. @thejosephplacido’s 4-slide story above scored 31.2×, and a 5-slide opinion post by @tomnoske scored 19.5×. Short works when the idea is short.

Story is common, but opinion scores higher

The niche page splits the 307 outliers by format:

  • List: 136 outliers, median 2.0×
  • Story: 94 outliers, median 1.7×
  • Opinion: 42 outliers, median 2.6×
  • How-to: 12 outliers, median 2.1×

Story is the second most common format here, which makes sense for a niche built on trips and days out, but it has the lowest median of the four. Opinion is the smallest of the big three and has the highest median, well above the 2.0× for opinion outliers across the whole library. Across our full sample, story carousels reached 2× their creator’s usual 22.3% of the time, a little below the 23.8% average.

Two of the opinion outliers show what a take looks like in this niche:

“I just want enough money to eat out every night, do my long runs at 8am & drive a 911” — @tomnoske, 19.5×, 21,414 likes and comments, 5 slides

“On Brand clean girl is out, party girl is in fun & self-expression as an antidote to all the horrors” — @onbrandmag, 17.4×, 14,604 likes and comments, 10 slides

Neither is about a place. Both take a side on how to live. For the structure, see our opinion carousel examples.

Two patterns in the first slides: money and time

Of the eight transcribed first slides on the niche page, three lead with money. Besides @tomnoske above:

“Yes, I could’ve been thousands of dollars richer, but then I never would’ve...” — @eliexploress, 17.0×, 37,015 likes and comments, 20 slides, story

“she was aiming for $10,000 a hundred thousand dollars of debt, gone in three weeks. Nina put a $45 travel guide on one link on August 5. She had never sold…” — @stanforcreators, 24.4×, 7,270 likes and comments, 9 slides, case study

One weighs money against experiences; the other shows a travel guide paying off a debt. Both talk about money before they mention a single place.

The other pattern is time. “Only two generations ago, this was Dubai.” (@qissagoi.ae, 26.3×, 6,278 likes and comments, 10 slides, story) is seven words that put a familiar place in another era. It sits in the length band that did best in our data: across 5,442 transcribed first slides, those of 6–10 words reached 2× their creator’s usual 25.6% of the time, against 19.7% for five words or fewer. Our carousel hook guide has more patterns like these.

Lifestyle and travel first slides that worked

The opening slide decides whether anyone swipes. These are the first slides of carousels that beat their creator’s usual, transcribed from the slide.

  • “Yes, I could've been thousands of dollars richer, but then I never would've...”

    @eliexploress · 17× their usual · Story
  • “@coolgirlceo iconicside quests for each month of 2026”

    @coolgirlceo · 14× their usual · List
  • ““you can’t just run away from your problems” ok i'll fly.”

    @inspiredmediaco · 10× their usual · Story
  • “WOULD YOU CHOOSE AN AIRLINE THAT LETS YOU AVOID SITTING NEXT TO MEN?”

    @the_female_lead · 7.2× their usual · News
  • “my sugar daddy just took me on an all-expenses paid trip to Mexico”

    @herfirst100k · 3.6× their usual · Story
  • “EVERYTHING WE SPENT 2.5 weeks in Japan (as not super budget, not luxury travelers)”

    @travelingtoretirement · 3.0× their usual · Case study

Each idea takes the structure of an outlier above. Borrow the shape, not the slides or the words.

  1. Then and now, in one line. From @qissagoi.ae’s 10-slide story. Open on a single sentence that moves a place you know back a generation or two, then alternate old and current photos, one pair per slide.
  2. The list that asks what’s missing. From @madlertravel’s 11-slide list. Make a list your audience will want to complete, places visited or a region’s best stops, and end the caption on a question about what you left out.
  3. What I spent instead of saving. From @eliexploress’s 20-slide story. One trip or experience per slide, each one a thing the money went on, ending on why you’d do it again.
  4. A side quest for every month. From a 14-slide list by @coolgirlceo that promised side quests “for each month of 2026” and scored 13.6× with 131,154 likes and comments. Twelve months, twelve slides, one trip or local plan each.
  5. Hobbies that get you off your phone. From the 7-slide @billionaireunions list and the 20-slide @cozylifediary list. One hobby per slide, with a photo of it done well and a line on how to start.

Frequently asked questions

Start from travel posts that beat their creator’s usual. In our library they include lists of countries and places, then-and-now posts such as “Only two generations ago, this was Dubai.” (@qissagoi.ae, 26.3×), month-by-month side quests and stories that weigh money against experiences. Keep the structure and use your own places.

The median lifestyle and travel outlier in our library has 10 slides, and 62% use nine or more. Across all niches, carousels with 11–15 slides reached 2× their creator’s usual most often (27.7%). Short posts can still work: a 4-slide story here scored 31.2×.

Which format works best for lifestyle and travel carousels?

Lists are the most common, with 136 of 307 outliers at a median of 2.0×. Opinion posts are fewer, 42, but have the highest median at 2.6×. Story posts are common (94) but have the lowest median, 1.7×.

Are travel carousels harder to grow with than other niches?

A little. Of 745 lifestyle and travel carousels we scored, 46.0% beat their creator’s usual, against 49.3% overall, the second-lowest of 13 niches. But at 3× the niche matches the average (14.8% against 14.9%), so the posts that break out go just as far.
