How this was measured

Top Carousels scores each Instagram carousel against its own creator’s usual: likes + comments divided by the median of up to 20 of that creator’s carousels posted closest in time (at least 7 comparisons; paid posts, giveaways, comments-off and posts under a week old are excluded from comparisons). About half of all carousels beat their creator’s usual by definition, because the usual is a median. The useful numbers are the differences between groups and how often a carousel doubled it.

The sample is every carousel with 2 or more slides that Top Carousels has scored, whether or not it is shown in the library. Topics and formats are labelled by an AI classifier; first-slide text is read from the slide images. The numbers update as new carousels are scored.

Frequently asked questions

What percentage of Instagram carousels go viral?

In a sample of 11,240 Instagram carousels from 212+ creators, 23.6% got at least twice their creator’s usual likes and comments, 8% got five times and 3.3% got ten times. Top Carousels counts a carousel as an outlier when it beats the median of up to 20 of the same creator’s carousels.

How many slides should an Instagram carousel have?

Carousels with 11–15 slides were the most likely to double their creator’s usual engagement (27.9%), across 11,240 carousels. Very short carousels of 2–3 slides were the least likely. Instagram allows up to 20 slides.

What type of Instagram carousel performs best?

List carousels were the most likely common format to double their creator’s usual engagement (25.6%). Reference carousels such as cheat sheets did even better but are rare.

How long should the first slide of a carousel be?

First slides of 6–10 words did best: 24.9% of those carousels doubled their creator’s usual likes and comments. Questions and all-caps first slides did slightly worse than plain statements.

What is the best day to post an Instagram carousel?

In this data it barely matters. The share of carousels that doubled their creator’s usual engagement varied by only a few points across the days of the week (UTC). What the first slide says matters far more than when it goes out.
