Viral Content Creation Carousels: What 584 Outliers Have in Common

The top content creation carousel in our library scored 1,325× its creator’s usual. What 584 outliers show about formats, first slides and length.

The highest-scoring content creation carousel in our library is a 6-slide list by @kienobifilms, captioned “100 views are not ‘small.’” It got 836,860 likes and comments, 1,325.2× the creator’s usual of about 630.

That caption sums up a pattern in the niche. Across 584 content creation outliers from 60 creators, the ones that ran furthest either speak to how posting feels or hand the reader something to use the same day. Below are the numbers, the first slides, the formats and five ideas built on real outlier structures.

A long way at the very top, though that’s rare. The median content creation outlier in our library scored 2.0× its creator’s usual. These six went much further:

  • 1,325.2×: @kienobifilms, 836,860 likes and comments, 6 slides, list. Caption: “100 views are not ‘small.’”
  • 144.7×: @smrt.cc, 26,127 likes and comments, 8 slides, case study. First slide: “Color Grading Prompt prompt”.
  • 73×: @creatoearn, 6,611 likes and comments, 7 slides, how-to. Caption: “Under 20k followers, talking to camera”.
  • 70.4×: @yoursocialteam, 22,536 likes and comments, 8 slides, list. The caption offers templates to anyone who comments “DROPS”.
  • 34.6×: @redonadida, 15,857 likes and comments, 10 slides, list. Caption: “Also spend 80% of your time working on the cover with your hook.”
  • 29.9×: @peter.visuals, 44,337 likes and comments, 7 slides, how-to. Caption: “Hashtags are dead.”

Where we don’t have the first slide transcribed, we quote the caption and say so.

The list also shows why we score each post against its own creator. @creatoearn’s 6,611 likes and comments is a small number next to @peter.visuals’ 44,337, yet it’s the bigger outlier: 73× its creator’s usual against 29.9×. Each score divides a post’s likes and comments by the median of up to 20 of that creator’s carousels posted around the same time.

On the averages, an ordinary niche

By the base rates, content creation sits almost exactly on the average. In our sample of 9,923 scored carousels, 1,304 are about content creation, more than any other niche. Here’s how they did against their creators’ usual:

  • Beat it at all: 49.5% (overall 49.3%)
  • Reached 2×: 24.1% (overall 23.8%)
  • Reached 3×: 14.4% (overall 14.9%)
  • Median score: 0.9× (overall 0.9×)

So on the averages, content creation posts break out about as often as any others. The rest of this post looks at what the outliers share: their ideas and their structures.

A caveat that applies to every rate in this post: these are the creators we track, not Instagram as a whole, and a rate that goes with better results isn’t proof that it causes them.

What do viral content creation carousels have in common?

Read the niche’s first slides and captions side by side and two groups stand out, plus a smaller third.

Posts about the nerve it takes to post.

“starts posting gets judged” — @itseileenyang, 8.5×, 13,408 likes and comments, 9-slide list

“first they call you cringe then ask how you did it...” — @thediaryofaceopodcast, 8.7×, 79,083 likes and comments, 5-slide opinion

“lucky girl syndrome. LinkedIn can make you the luckiest girl on the internet” — @nicolemargueritegray, 10.2×, 1,696 likes and comments, 6-slide opinion

Add the 1,325.2× post captioned “100 views are not ‘small.’” and the niche’s biggest outlier belongs here too. None of these first slides promises a tactic. Each names something creators worry about (being judged, looking cringe, small numbers) and takes the reader’s side.

Posts that hand over a tool. “Color Grading Prompt prompt” (@smrt.cc, 144.7×) is a case study built around one prompt. @yoursocialteam’s template post (70.4×) and “Visual trends this week” (@socialstocks.co, 7.7×, list) work the same way: the reader leaves with something to use.

Posts that put a result on the cover. “This creator got 15 million views from one video” (@stanforcreators, 9.8×, 5,059 likes and comments, 8-slide case study) leads with one number; the caption adds the creator’s growth from 44k to 111k followers.

Length varies more than you might expect. Across 5,442 transcribed first slides in our data, those of 6–10 words reached 2× their creator’s usual most often (25.6%), against 19.7% for five words or fewer. Three of the hooks above have four words, so treat that as a nudge, not a rule. In our 10 hook patterns, the cringe line is a comeback: it quotes what people say, then answers it.

First slides from content creation outliers

The opening slide decides whether anyone swipes. These are the first slides of carousels that beat their creator’s usual, transcribed from the slide.

  • “lucky girl syndrome. LinkedIn can make you the luckiest girl on the internet”

    @nicolemargueritegray · 10× their usual · Opinion
  • “THIS CREATOR GOT 15 MILLION VIEWS FROM ONE VIDEO”

    @stanforcreators · 9.8× their usual · Case study
  • “HOW TO BUILD A PERSONAL BRAND SO MAGNETIC That People Beg To Buy From You.”

    @tomnoske · 9.2× their usual · Opinion
  • “VISUAL TRENDS THIS WEEK”

    @socialstocks.co · 7.7× their usual · List
  • “How I grew my Substack to 20K in 6 months (and how to start yours)”

    @itshannahzhang · 6.1× their usual · Case study

Opinion posts score highest here

List is the most common format among content creation outliers, but not the one with the highest median score. From our content creation carousel ideas page:

  • List: 278 outliers, median 1.9×
  • How-to: 107 outliers, median 2.1×
  • Opinion: 98 outliers, median 2.3×
  • Case study: 42 outliers, median 2.0×
  • Story: 39 outliers, median 1.7×

Opinion is third by count and first by median. That stands out, because across all 9,923 scored carousels, opinion posts reached 2× their creator’s usual a little less often than average (22.9% against 23.8%). One reading: a take on content creation is judged by people who make content, and when it’s sharp enough to clear that bar, it travels. The opinion carousels about content creation collect them.

The niche also leans on how-to posts. Content creation accounts for 107 of the library’s 445 how-to outliers, 24%, while it makes up 15% of all outliers. Our how-to carousel examples show that structure across every niche.

Story is the weak spot, with the lowest median of the five (1.7×).

Eight slides is typical, and 9–12 is common

Most content creation outliers use 8 slides. Here’s the spread across all 584:

  • 2–5 slides: 13%
  • 6–8 slides: 42%
  • 9–12 slides: 38%
  • 13–20 slides: 7%

That 38% at 9–12 slides is higher than in AI & tech (31%) or psychology (30%). Several of the niche’s top outliers sit in that band: @thesenuka (28×, 9 slides), @growithalex (26×, 9 slides), @tinnaloaizaofficial (25×, 10 slides) and @imdanielaqueiroz (20×, 11 slides).

It fits the wider data. In our full sample, carousels with 11–15 slides reached 2× their creator’s usual 27.7% of the time, against 17.3% for 2–3 slides. That doesn’t mean every post needs to be long: @thediaryofaceopodcast’s 5-slide opinion post scored 8.7× on 79,083 likes and comments.

Each idea borrows one outlier’s structure: its format, its length and the job its first slide does. Keep the shape and write everything else yourself, as in Artem’s remix case study.

  1. Reframe a number creators feel bad about. Structure: @kienobifilms, a 6-slide list. Pick one figure your audience is embarrassed by, such as a low view count or a slow first month. Give each slide one way of seeing it differently and end on what to do next.
  2. Name the stages of starting out. Structure: @itseileenyang’s 9-slide list, which opens on a four-word sequence. Map what happens when someone starts something public, such as a podcast or a newsletter, one stage per slide, and land on the stage your reader wants to reach.
  3. Show one tool working. Structure: @smrt.cc’s 8-slide case study built around a single prompt. Choose one preset, template or prompt you actually use, and give each slide one before-and-after on real material. Name the tool on the cover in a few words.
  4. Break down one result. Structure: @stanforcreators’ 8-slide case study, with the result on the cover. Take one post that did far better than usual (yours, or a client’s with permission), put the number on slide one, then give one slide to each decision behind it.
  5. Drop a habit, then replace it. Structure: @peter.visuals’ 7-slide how-to, captioned “Hashtags are dead.” Name one common habit you’ve stopped, show what happened on your own account, then give the steps you do instead. Only make the claim if your own numbers back it.

Frequently asked questions

Start from posts that already beat their creator’s usual. In our library the strongest fall into two groups: posts about how posting feels, such as “starts posting gets judged” (@itseileenyang, 8.5×), and posts that hand over a tool, such as a single colour-grading prompt (@smrt.cc, 144.7×). Keep the structure and write about your own work.

Why do opinion carousels score so well in content creation?

Opinion is only third by count among the niche’s 584 outliers (98 posts), but it has the highest median score: 2.3×, against 1.9× for lists and 2.1× for how-tos. One reading is that creators judge takes on their own craft closely, so the ones that clear the bar travel. Across all niches, opinion posts reach 2× slightly less often than average.

Most outliers in this niche use 8 slides, and 80% use 6–12. Across our 9,923 scored carousels, those with 11–15 slides reached 2× their creator’s usual most often (27.7%), and 2–3 slide carousels least often (17.3%).

Do content creation carousels go viral more often than other niches?

Not on average. Of 1,304 scored content creation carousels, 24.1% reached 2× their creator’s usual, almost exactly the 23.8% across all niches. The difference is at the top: the niche’s biggest outlier, by @kienobifilms, scored 1,325.2×.
